Did You Know?

The child in orange has a bun above his ear, while the rest of his head is clean-shaven, like the other children’s.

Description

The four-character mark on the base of this vase indicates that it was made in Jingdezhen and then sent to Beijing to be decorated in the imperial workshops by painters who were trained in using Western perspective and shading.
A white porcelain vessel features a rounded body and tall yellow neck flanked by pink handles. Scrolling blue and green patterns with a dragon decorate the neck. The central body depicts a woman and three children playing in a garden; she cradles one child while a boy in a green robe stands nearby. Decorative pink and blue geometric bands encircle the top rim and flared base.
