Did You Know?

This painting showcases a delicate painting technique and an intimate view.

Description

This leaf is an early example of a new mode in landscape painting expressed in vistas of water-rich scenery that developed since the 900s. Li Anzhong, a court artist during the 1100s, witnessed the transition of the capital from Kaifeng across the Yangzi River to Hangzhou.
A horizontally oriented ink and color on silk painting in muted brown and gray tones depicts a misty landscape. On the left, a dense grove of trees with hints of red surrounds a small cottage. A river flows through the center from the hazy background. To the right, a solitary, bent tree with sparse branches leans inward. Red square seals and black characters mark the edges of the soft, atmospheric scene.
