Roger Marx (1859–1913), was an influential collector in addition to his work as an art critic.

Description

Later in life, Odilon Redon turned to portraiture, creating likenesses of both commissioned sitters and his close friends. This print represents a figure central to his artistic and social milieu: Roger Marx was an influential critic who championed Redon’s work. Redon depicted only the head and profile of his subject, sketching Marx with fine and delicate detail. He produced just a small number of impressions of the lithograph, accentuating its personal and intimate theme.
A vertically oriented black ink lithograph on China paper depicts a man's head in profile, looking to our left. He has a bald head and a long, textured beard that flows downward, tapering into fine, wispy lines. Delicate shading and thin strokes define his eye, nose, and ear. The portrait is centered, with the year 1904 written in small, dark numerals in the lower right.
