Did You Know?

The colorful overglaze enamel that decorates this cane handle was typical of Japanese Kakiemon decoration.

Description

During the first half of the 18th century, porcelain cane handles were widely produced by the Saint-Cloud porcelain factory. This cane handle, molded in the shape of the head and torso of an Asian man, is representative of the popularity of chinoiserie, European designs that attempted to imitate the art, culture, and techniques of China and Japan.
A white porcelain cane handle is shaped like a human head on an arched, horizontal body supported by a cylindrical base. Facing right, the head has narrow eyes, a thin mustache, and a small red hair tuft. A green band circles the neck, while multicolored floral sprays decorate the white surface. The body curves sharply to the left. The face features prominent ears and red lips, all rendered in fine enamel.
