Description

This print was first published in Le Charivari (September 4, 1842) as plate 24 from the series Ancient History.
A vertically oriented print in black ink depicts Ariadne, a woman with long dark hair and a light gown, sitting in profile facing our right on a rocky shore. Wearing sandals with ankle ties, she rests her chin on her hand, gazing toward a small ship sailing away. To our left, grapevines with clusters of fruit grow. Sketchy, expressive lines define the scene. French text borders the image at the top and bottom.
