Description

This print was published in Le Charivari (September 25 , 1842) as plate 26 from the series Ancient History.
A vertically oriented black-inked lithograph depicts Hercules, a stocky man with a thick beard and furrowed brow, standing in the center and facing our right. He wears a lion skin and high dark boots while holding a long-handled shovel. To our right, cattle stand with their rear ends facing us inside a wooden stable. Dense, sketchy lines texture the dark background and hay. French text at the bottom is titled "LES ÉCURIES D'AUGIAS."
