Description

This print was published in Le Charivari (October 6, 1842) as plate 28 from the series Ancient History.
A vertically oriented black ink lithograph on off-white paper depicts a light-skinned man, Hannibal, seated in a snowy mountain landscape. Wearing a plumed helmet and armor, he looks down at a glass jar labeled "BOCALUS CORNICHONUM." To our right, a large barrel is inscribed "BONUM VINAIGRUM D'ORLEANUS." In the distant background, tiny soldiers cluster in the snow. French text below the scene identifies it as "LE PASSAGE D'ANNIBAL."
