Description

This print was published in Le Charivari (December 31, 1842) as plate 48 from the series Ancient History.
A vertically oriented lithograph depicts a large, barefoot man in a floral crown sitting against a tree while playing a long, flared pipe. Facing him, a small, gaunt man stands with his head tilted back and mouth open. The background reveals a wide body of water and distant, sketchy hills. Above the frame, text reads "HISTOIRE ANCIENNE," and below, the caption "LES BERGERS DE VIRGILE" is followed by four lines of French verse.
