Description

Shitao’s skillfully rendered composition suggests a sweeping movement from the base of the central rising mass, silhouette of forest, and a bright bend of misty atmosphere under the distant hills, to form almost a continual circle of energy—a gentle vortex. That is a perfect embodiment of the early Qing ideal of a momentous flow, with suggestion of the subterranean veins and linkages.
A muted, vertically oriented ink and color painting depicts a tall, tapered brown rock formation rising centrally from dark green trees. To the left, gray-roofed houses sit nestled in foliage, while a pale path curves around the rock's right base. Muted beige hills recede toward a pale blue sky. Three red square seals mark the margins. Soft washes of color stylize the landscape, guiding the eye up the vertical rock face.
