Did You Know?

The design of plovers flying over waves derives from Heian period (900s–1100s) literature and later lacquerware designs.

Description

The Ogata brothers Kōrin and Kenzan often collaborated on ceramics. This dish is one of a set used for serving tea cakes. Kenzan shaped the dish, after which Kōrin drew the iron oxide design of plovers, a type of shorebird, flying over waves. Kenzan then covered the object with a clear glaze and fired it. Kōrin placed his signature next to his design, while Kenzan signed the back.
A square stoneware dish, shallow with vertical walls, is finished with a crackled tan glaze and dark brown brushwork. Inside, a stylized wave surges from the bottom left toward the center beneath small, dark birds in flight. A repeating band of scrolling vines and flowers wraps around the exterior. A network of fine cracks covers the glossy surface, contrasting the organic movement of the water with the vessel's rigid geometric form.
