Description

A unique landscape painting in the existing body of Chen Hongshou’s art, this painting reveals his involvement with the practice of fang (imitation) to achieve creative transformation. Chen acquired the tradition stemming from Dong Yuan of the Five Dynasties, with which he sought an artistic individuality that lends his work an idiosyncratic vision and extraordinary power.
A hanging scroll with ink on silk depicts a vertical landscape with dense, layered strokes. Gnarled trees with textured bark dominate the foreground, where a small figure sits on a rocky ledge. Steep ridges zigzag toward the top, etched with vertical waterfalls and dark, horizontal streaks of foliage. Chinese calligraphy and red seals appear in the upper right (see "Inscriptions"), with more seals in the lower corners.
