Description

In 1919, an art commentator described Abbott Handerson Thayer as "a man of slight build and of a nervous temperament, with a glance so intense and clear and penetrating; with a mind so keen and logical and which acts with such precision that the impression received of the man's personality is enduring."
A vertically oriented oil painting in thick brushstrokes depicts a bald man with light skin tone, a dark mustache, and his mouth set in a straight line. He faces us, looking toward our right, and wears a cream-colored jacket over a white collared shirt and dark necktie. He emerges from a shadowy, textured background of brown and black. The lower portion is loosely painted, dissolving into the dark atmosphere.
