Description

Influenced by his brother, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, and other Nazarenes, Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld first concerned himself exclusively with religious and literary subjects. In the 1830s, however, he turned more to landscape, in part under the direction of Ferdinand Olivier.
A vertically oriented black ink and brown wash drawing on tan paper depicts a gnarled tree trunk. Dark washes define the jagged bark, with one side bathed in light and the other in deep shadow. Thin, leafless branches sprout from the trunk and base, extending into the surrounding pale sandy-brown space. The minimalist composition features a low horizon line with fine twigs, emphasizing the solitary, textured trunk against the neutral background.
