Description

This oil sketch showing St. Peter's Basilica in the distance was painted during the artist's stay in Rome, 1777–85. Its spontaneity and freshness is typical of the artist's outdoor paintings, in which he sought to capture the light and atmosphere of Rome.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a sun-drenched cityscape. In the foreground, a textured low wall borders a brown, earthy field. Behind it, dark green trees rise on the left, while a central dome of pale gold dominates the midground. Buildings with orange-tiled roofs cluster to the right, shrouded in a soft haze. Muted hills rest under a pale blue sky streaked with clouds, all bathed in warm, golden light.
