Did You Know?

The small bull in the middle of his throne identifies him as Rishabha, which means "bull" in Sanskrit.

Description

The first to achieve liberation, according to followers of Jainism, is the golden Jina named Rishabha. He is shown seated in glory on the first page of a Sanskrit text on yoga and meditation. This manuscript begins on the verso; the recto was left blank.
A horizontally oriented palm leaf manuscript, painted with gum tempera and ink, depicts the light-skinned Rishabha seated cross-legged beneath a patterned arch. He rests his hands in his lap, flanked by small attendants and vertical columns of black Devanagari script on the tan surface. Three circular red stains mark the leaf's ends and center, where a small hole is pierced. The crowned figure is framed by weathered, uneven edges.
