Description

This painting, from later in a Sanskrit text on yoga and meditation, shows the transmission of the teaching. The senior monk on a throne, who may also be the text’s author, faces a disciple with a sacred book on a stand under a canopy between them. Below is a pious assembly of lay followers and nuns.
Two horizontally oriented palm leaf folios are displayed top and bottom, illustrated with gum tempera and ink. The top leaf features a central red panel with figures flanked by black script, punctuated by a circular hole to the left. Below, the second leaf contains two script sections divided by a central hole. Saturated red circular marks sit at the far ends. Aged, irregular borders highlight the manuscript's delicate, historical composition.
