Description

Karel van Mander (1548–1606) is best known as an author, although he was most active as an artist under the influence of Goltzius. His most famous work is the 1604 publication, Het Schilder-boeck (The Book of Painters), a part-theoretical and part-biographical study. In 1583, Van Mander settled in Haarlem, and became closely involved with Goltzius and his circle.
A horizontally oriented engraving in black ink depicts the Judgment of Midas. On our left, Apollo, with light skin tone, sits holding a stringed instrument and bow. In the center, a goat-legged Pan plays a flute while looking right. Midas, with light skin tone and donkey ears, sits beside Tmolus on our right. Nymphs and satyrs surround the group. Below, four columns of Latin text in a serif font are printed.
