Description

Thirty years before he captured Delhi and founded the Mughal Empire, Babur began his expansionist activities at the age of 13, as depicted in this painting of an encounter that took place in 1496. Having traveled long distances across harsh dry terrain, Babur confronted one of his rivals who, like him, was angling to march on and conquer the illustrious city of Samarkand, the former capital of his ancestor Timur.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and gold painting is composed of intricate figures within a lushly decorated border. At the center, a figure in orange atop a gray horse greets another in lavender on a brown horse. Below, attendants lead camels and horses through a stream. All figures have light skin tones. The background features craggy rocks and a single tree, all framed by a wide tan border of colorful flowers and gold vines.
