Description

A seasoned draftsman, Corinth produced more than 2,000 drawings over the course of his life. An elaborate crosshatch pattern of tightly packed charcoal lines creates this naturalistic view of a wooded landscape. The pale sky, described with white gouache on a tan sheet, suggests a cold, gray day; the palette is restrained except for a vibrant square of orange delineating the roof of a shed.
A horizontally oriented drawing in charcoal and pastel on tan paper depicts a dense forest. Spindly trees frame the scene, one leaning over a structure with a gate and orange roof. Thick, white dabs of gouache suggest a bright sky through the dark canopy. Smudged charcoal and layered, frenzied dashes form splotchy shrubbery and a hazy path. The paper provides a warm ground for the expressive marks and textured trunks.
