Description

Religious scenes are unusual during a century more interested in carefree themes. The prosperous bourgeoisie demanded works with decorative appeal for their homes-pictures of readily comprehensible subjects based on popular literature or theater and rendered with a light, colorful palette.
A vertically oriented print in black ink depicts a bearded man reclining against a lion. Partially nude with cloth draped over his legs, he rests his head on his arm. To our right, a winged figure points upward. In the upper left corner, two winged children hold an open tablet. Densely hatched lines create textured clouds and deep shadows, blending the figures into a dark, atmospheric background.
