Description

Roaring lions are rare in Egyptian art. They are, however, a common fixture in Persian art, from which the lion head in this case undoubtedly takes its stylistic cue.
A muted sage green faience sculpture depicts a lion's head facing right. A wide-open mouth reveals a tongue and small lower teeth within the jaws. The lion features bulging eyes and a broad nose with two nostrils. Parallel ridges are carved across the top and sides to represent a mane. The surface of the sculpture is mostly smooth but exhibits areas of reddish-brown weathering.
