Did You Know?

The cricket stands on the yellowing leaf of a ripening rice plant.

Description

Leaf 7 Han Tan's colophon reads: Thoughts of autumn in the nuptial chamber with the new chill arising, The white frost all persuasive with a bright moon shining. Outside the window, a crisp wind conveys the sound of crickets. Within this quiet dream, I seem to sense the fragrance of orchids.
A horizontally oriented album leaf with ink and color on silk features two rectangular panels inset in a patterned cream mount. The right panel depicts a green grasshopper on a yellowed, serrated leaf, with a fly and pink-purple flowering stalks. To the left, five vertical columns of black ink calligraphy are punctuated by red seals. The composition balances detailed naturalism with expressive brushwork, characteristic of traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting.
