Description

This page describes the joyous and peaceful pregnancy of Queen Trishala, mother of the 24th Jina Mahavira, which lasted 9 months, 7-and-a-half days. It goes on to say that Mahavira was born at midnight on the 13th day of the first month of summer, and all omens augured success. The painting shows the happy mother nestling her infant on a swing.
Two horizontal manuscript pages are displayed one above the other. The top page features dense black script breaking around a central red circle. The bottom page contains script on our left and a tempera painting on our right. In the scene, a woman reclines on a patterned bed attended by two figures. Muted red, blue, and gold tones highlight the scene, which includes arched architecture and peacocks above, framed by decorative red borders.
