Description

This oil sketch was probably made on a trip through Massachusetts in the summer of 1853.
A vertically oriented oil painting uses textured brushstrokes to depict a dense forest. Dark green trees cover a steep hillside, nearly filling the composition. In the foreground, a stream flows over gray and brown rocks. Right of center, a small figure in red sits on a shaded ledge. At the upper left, a patch of pale gray sky peeks through the treetops. A signature and date mark a stone in the lower left corner.
