Description

Scheffer frequently portrayed his favorite pupil, the Princess Marie d'Orléans (1813-1839), daughter of King Louis Philippe and a prominent sculptor. As proof of her dedication and talent, she wears an artist's smock and holds a chisel. Seen nearby are several of her works, including her model of her most famous sculpture, a stoic depiction of Joan of Arc.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a seated woman with pale skin and dark hair pulled back. Facing our right, she turns to look toward us with dark eyes. She wears a voluminous light blue gown over a white underskirt. To our right, a large white sculpture of a winged figure stands on a table. Smaller sculptures rest on a shelf behind her, while a dark red patterned curtain hangs on our left.
