Description

One of the most powerful people in France at the beginning of the 18th century, Cardinal Guillaume Dubois (1656–1723) holds a letter addressed Au Roy, or “To the King.” The engraving reproduces a painting commemorating Louis XV’s ascendance to the throne in 1723.
A vertically oriented engraving depicts Cardinal Dubois, a man with light skin tone and a voluminous white wig, seated angled to our right in a carved chair. He wears a fur-lined cape over densely pleated, lace-trimmed robes. He rests a pouch in his lap and holds a paper inscribed "Au Roy" toward a desk. Heavy drapery frames him, while a wide margin below contains a coat of arms and text.
