Did You Know?

This kabuki actor was known for playing bad guys. His fans would have collected this portrait as a memento following his death in May 1838.
A vertical woodblock print depicts actor Matsumoto Koshiro V, an older man with light skin tone seated cross-legged and facing left. He has a prominent nose and wears a wide-shouldered, light-blue garment over a dark blue robe, holding prayer beads. Above him, vertical columns of Japanese calligraphy are layered over red dripping shapes. To our right, small text boxes and seals identify the subject and artist in the upper half.
