Description

The attribution of this unsigned painting remains unsettled and may be by a French or Italian artist. Among the names proposed have been Joseph-Marie Vien the Elder and Hugues Taraval.
A vertically oriented oil painting on paper depicts a man with medium-light skin tone, dark curly hair, and a bushy beard. He turns toward our left with a furrowed brow and lips slightly parted. He wears a dark brown tunic over a light collar. On our right, his hands grasp a thick wooden staff. Visible brushstrokes and strong light from our left highlight his face against a dark, shadowy background.
