Did You Know?

Although the painter captures his companion's attention, his young servant is having a nap.

Description

This is one of a pair of screens showing a group of elite Chinese gentlemen and their servants in the countryside. One man is considering his painting-in-progress. Historically, practicing or admiring painting was considered a skill essential for cultured men in China.
A six-panel folding screen depicts a landscape stretching continuously across the panels in ink and pale washes against a tan background. On the left, two figures stand near a thatched building and craggy rocks. In the center, four figures gather around a table beneath a gnarled pine tree to examine a scroll. To the right, the composition opens into a vast, misty expanse of water and distant mountains rendered in soft gray and blue tones.
