Description

This detailed drawing of a blasted tree was a study for Cropsey’s painting The Cove--A Storm Scene in the Catskill Mountains (1851).
A vertically oriented pen and ink drawing on tan paper with a rounded top edge features two sketches. Above, a shattered tree stump with jagged, splintered wood reaches toward the right; hatching and brown washes define its rough texture. Below, a faint graphite grid resembling a floor plan is centered on the page. In the lower left corner, small handwritten notations and a date are visible.
