Description

This detailed drawing of a blasted tree was a study for Cropsey’s painting The Cove--A Storm Scene in the Catskill Mountains (1851).
A vertically oriented pen and ink drawing on arched tan paper depicts a jagged, splintered tree stump. The main trunk rises from the lower right with sharp shards extending upward, while a smaller fragment leans away on the left. Fine cross-hatching and brown wash create a weathered texture, accented by white highlights along fractured edges. Faint handwriting and a date appear in the lower left corner against the warm-toned paper.
