Description

This detailed drawing of a blasted tree was a study for Cropsey’s painting The Cove--A Storm Scene in the Catskill Mountains (1851).
A vertically oriented graphite drawing on tan paper with a rounded, arched top features a centrally placed rectangular sketch, its grid of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines rendered with varying thicknesses. Faint scribbles drift to our left of the form. In the lower-left corner, initials and numbers are inscribed. The mottled paper surface is dappled with light and dark spots throughout.
