Description

Neroccio di Bartolomeo de’ Landi was both a painter and sculptor. He was a student of Vecchietta, and then he shared a workshop with Francesco di Giorgio from 1468. Neroccio is considered by many to be a Madonna painter par excellence. His aristocratic images were much appreciated in his time, and he is perhaps among Siena’s last great painters of the 1500s.
A vertically oriented tempera painting depicts the Virgin Mary and the nude baby Christ, both with light skin tones, against a gold background. Mary wears a dark cloak over a red gown, her hands clasped and eyes downcast. Christ has curly hair and sits on a dark cushion to our left, raising his right hand. Patterned gold halos surround their heads, and a small bird stands on the ledge near his foot.
