Description

Many English watercolorists of the period were especially interested in capturing natural effects of the landscape, such as cloud formations. Such studies were of particular interest to the French Impressionists.
A horizontally oriented watercolor sketch on a cream paper strip depicts a sky with swirling clouds. On the left, a large, dark blue and reddish-gray cloud formation rises diagonally toward the top center. Muted terracotta washes line the bottom edge. To the right, the sky opens to pale blue with wispy white clouds and delicate, curved pencil lines sketching rounded forms. Soft blue washes blend into the cream background.
