Description

In 1809, the popular young French military hero General Auguste Colbert died at a battle in Spain. The following year, Schnetz depicted the moment of Colbert's death. This is the study for a much larger painting exhibited at the Paris Salon, but now lost. The exploits of Napoleon and his army were popular subjects for French artists whose work was shown in official exhibitions.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts General Colbert, a man with a light skin tone, leaning back in a white and gold uniform while supported by a soldier in a blue jacket and red trousers. On our left, a soldier beats a drum. To our right, a man on a brown horse faces away. Thick white smoke and a blue banner billow in the background among several other uniformed figures in this dark scene.
