Did You Know?

The elephant's features are worn and softened due to weathering.

Description

The Cham kingdom was located in present-day central Vietnam and was a powerful rival of the Khmer in Cambodia. During the time when this charming, naturalistic elephant sculpture was made, the Cham were actively absorbing stylistic elements from India.
A brown sandstone sculpture depicts an elephant with a rough, grainy texture and weathered edges. Its body is oriented right while the head turns forward, ears flaring. The trunk curves across the chest to touch the animal's side. The elephant has thick legs, with its front right leg bent forward. The surface is worn throughout, with chips and loss of detail across the stone form.
