Description

Claude Lorrain changed the direction of European landscape painting by opening up vistas that fade into either morning or evening sun. A prolific draftsman, he emphasized the tranquil and idyllic nature of the Roman countryside.
A horizontally oriented drawing in pen and brown ink with brown and gray wash on paper depicts a pastoral landscape with four light-skinned figures. On the left, a man reclines beneath a leafy tree holding a staff, with a second man behind him. To the right, two women stand together, one with her hand clutching her chest. Between them, a dog sits. Rolling hills and a light sky form the background.
