Description

Venice was an important center for the production of woodcuts during the 1500s. Titian (1488-1576), the celebrated Venetian painter, exerted tremendous influence on the graphic arts. His vibrant, monumental woodcut designs inspired generations of artists, including Giuseppe Scolari, who is known today only through a handful of woodcuts. The dramatic composition and the bold linear treatment are characteristic of Scolari's style.
A horizontal woodcut in black ink depicts Christ, a man with a light skin tone, beard, and wavy hair, lying in the foreground with wounds and a rayed halo. Shaded with dense hatching, he wears a loincloth near a crown of thorns. A figure in voluminous hooded robes leans over him from our left. Three crosses stand on a distant hill and a large tree trunk sits against a rising sun.
