Description

Hua Yan is one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, who rejected orthodox ideas about painting.
An ink and light color painting on paper depicts a man with light skin tone seated beneath a sprawling pine tree. Facing right in a pale robe, he rests against the tree's thick, textured trunk. To the left, a child peers from behind a jagged rock. Dark needle clusters and hanging vines detail the overhanging branches against a plain background. Calligraphy and a red seal mark the upper right corner.
