Description

Hua Yan is one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, who rejected Orthodox ideas about painting.
An album leaf in ink and light color depicts a man in a pink robe and a child in blue under a thatched roof. The man sits behind a table with a scroll while the child prepares ink. A gnarled tree with dark, feathery leaf clusters curves over the open pavilion. Calligraphy and a red seal mark the upper left corner. The scene is rendered with delicate lines and muted tones against a pale background.
