Description

Hua Yan’s painting of a gentleman admiring orange chrysanthemums evokes a quote from the poem Drinking Wine by poet and recluse Tao Qian (also called Tao Yuanming, AD 365–427): "I pluck chrysanthemums under the eastern fence, and serenely I gaze at the southern mountains."
An ink and light color painting on a square album leaf depicts an elderly man in a light blue robe walking right through a landscape of spindly, bare trees rendered in gray washes. He holds a thin staff, set against a pale background. In the lower right, vibrant orange flowers grow along a low wooden fence. A vertical column of black calligraphy and a red seal occupy the left side.
