Description

Ōmi is an area around Lake Biwa near Kyoto. The Shinto shrine Hiyoshi Taisha and the Buddhist temple Ishiyamadera are in the upper right and upper left of the composition, respectively. At center is the pilgrimage route and people in the town before the temple gates. Harvested rice fields to the right and flowering cherry blossom trees at left show seasonal change from winter to spring.
A horizontally oriented ink and color painting on a six-panel screen depicts a gilded landscape, at the center of which numerous figures with light skin tones gather in a walled courtyard near white blossoming trees. To the left, a temple stands on stilts over a waterfall. To the right, small boats navigate dark water. Billowing gold clouds drift throughout, while green and blue pigments accent the roofs and foliage.
