Did You Know?

This photograph captures the sense of interior reflection sometimes found in portraits of their friends and family painted by the Impressionists.

Description

It is not surprising that the photograph recalls paintings. Robert Demachy, who had started experimenting with photography in the 1870s, was part of the Pictorialist movement, artists from Europe and the United States who argued that photography was a fine art medium. They often found stylistic and narrative inspiration for their photographs in paintings, drawings, and prints.
A vertically oriented gum bichromate print depicts a man with a light skin tone, wavy hair, and a dark moustache. He wears a dark three-piece suit with a white pocket square. Seated with a solemn expression, his right hand rests on his leg. To the right, a framed portrait of a child appears in the soft-focus, dark background. Muted tones and deep shadows create a somber, moody atmosphere throughout the composition.
