One performer is playing a hand-held drum, like CMA 1918.349.

Description

Manzai is the Japanese term for wandering comic dancers. The painting depicts one of the traditional pleasures of the spring season.
A hanging scroll depicts two performers with light skin tones. Floating against the beige paper, the top figure wears a red floral kimono and green vest, holding an open fan. Below, a person in a yellow patterned kimono and dark vest crouches while playing a hand drum. The scene is grounded by a rocky outcrop and bare tree branch extending from the right. Japanese calligraphy and a red seal appear at the bottom right.
