Description

The ancient pine is an admired subject in Asian painting and symbolizes the desirable human qualities of wisdom and solid moral character.
A hanging scroll in black and gray ink strokes depicts a pine tree rising from the lower left. Dark, jagged brushstrokes and dabs define the textured bark, while fanned clusters of thin lines form the needles. On our right, columns of Chinese calligraphy (see "Inscriptions") appear in varying black tones. A small red seal sits below the text against the mottled, cream-colored paper.
