Description

Shunsho was a well-known painter and printmaker in Edo (present-day Tokyo) who dominated the actor print field. He was very important as a teacher to some of the most talented artists of the next generation, including Shunko, Shunzan, and Shunei.
A vertical woodblock print depicts a man with light skin, long black hair, and red eye makeup, standing with legs apart and facing our left. Wearing a tan and green patterned robe with a white sash, he reveals green patterns on his arms and chest. He holds a wooden staff while a sword hangs at his waist. He stands on a green floor against wood-framed walls with Japanese calligraphy in the corner.
