Description

Seven plays based on legends from the life of 9th-century poet Ono no Komachi served as the source for this print series. The entertainer Takigawa gazes at a hanging scroll depicting Komachi as she appears in a scene from the play The Gravestone.
A woodblock print features Takigawa, a woman with light skin, in the central three-fifths. Seated and looking right, she wears a leaf-patterned white kimono and many hairpins. Japanese calligraphy appears on a fan in the upper left and above an inset of an older person in the upper right. A black stand with dishes sits in the lower right. Vertical calligraphy lines the center left and the far left margin.
