Description

Hans Bol (1534–1593) was active in Antwerp as a painter, etcher, and miniaturist. He is shown here at the age of 58, the last year of his life. The skull and the upside-down torches in the ornamental frame are evidence that the engraving was made after Bol's death.
A vertically oriented intricate print in black ink depicts a bearded man with a light skin tone in a pleated ruff, facing our right within an oval frame. Above him, two winged children flank a globe, holding a mirror and drawing tools. Below, a skull rests on a plaque inscribed with Latin text, flanked by two winged figures. Garlands of fruit hang at the sides. Fine lines define the surrounding allegorical elements.
