Did You Know?

The inscription says that this painting is done in the style of the Song dynasty period artist and poet Su Dongpo 蘇東坡 (1037–1101), who was also known as Su Shi.
A hanging scroll in muted brown tones on tan silk depicts a gnarled, leafless tree curving from the bottom center toward the right. Dark stippling textures its trunk and branches. To the left, clusters of delicate bamboo grow upward, while a large, smooth rock occupies the lower right. Chinese calligraphy (see "Inscriptions") and a red seal mark the upper left corner. Fine brushwork and earthy pigments characterize the composition.
