Did You Know?

John Lloyd did not have a formal career but was praised by his neighbors as a humorous poet, excellent painter, and skilled (amateur) photographer.

Description

This touching portrait contrasting age and youth was taken by amateur photographer John Lloyd. It shows two of the servants at his home, Rhagatt Hall, in Wales, which was built by an ancestor around 1739.
A vertically oriented sepia-toned albumen print depicts an older woman and a girl with medium-light skin tones. Facing forward, the woman wears a wide-brimmed hat over a ruffled white cap and a striped apron, resting her hands in her lap. To the left, the girl stands in profile looking at her, wearing a dark hat, light vest, and patterned skirt. They sit on large textured sacks atop a wooden crate.
